Christian Biography of Dr. William “Bill” Herbert Upton
William Herbert Upton, the son of Verne and Naida (Roder) Upton, was born on December 8, 1926 in Ohiowa, Nebraska. He passed away on May 2, 2013 at his home in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 86 years, 4 months, 24 days.
Bill was one of four children; he attended school in Ohiowa and graduated from Hastings High School. After high school, Bill attended Hastings College and the University of Nebraska Lincoln earning his Doctorate of Dentistry. He was united in marriage to Iva Mae Thompson on December 21, 1947 in Hastings. This union was blessed with two daughters, Vicki and Pam. She preceded him in death. He later was united in marriage to Betty Drennan Squires on June 30, 1985.
He served in the United States Navy. After his discharge they moved to Superior where he opened his Dental practice retiring in 2000.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #121, First United Methodist Church, Superior Country Club and was a past school board member. Bill enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, gardening, and Nebraska football.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Iva Mae on February 12, 1985; grandson David Sweet and two brothers Verne and Robert Upton.
He is survived by his wife Betty, daughters Vicki Sweet and husband Harold of Superior, Nebraska and Pam Hoefs and husband Michael of Lincoln, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Erin Niebuhr and family, Kara Baxter and family, Nick Hoefs and family, Jennifer Krehbiel and family, Kathleen Sweet, and Kristen Corman, nine great grandchildren, one sister Verjean Behrends and husband Bill of Houston, Texas
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 11:00 am from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Nebraska with Rev. Dr. Jocelyn Tupper officiating.
Music was “Meditation from Thias” and “The Lord’s Prayer,” performed by Kara Baxter as Violinist, Erin Niebuhr as Pianist and Brian Niebuhr as Cellist and congregational hymn “Amazing Grace,” with Carlita Price as Organist.
Visitation was held on May 3, 2013 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Pallbearers were Trevor Krehbiel, Brock Corman, Zach Alexander, Brian Niebuhr, Wes Baxter and Nick Hoefs.
Interment with Military Honors was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska.
Memorials are suggested to go to the First United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
