Christian Biography of William Fisher
William “Bill” Xirl Fisher, the son of Quintin and Mabel (Boswell) Fisher, was born on December 29, 1921 on farm north of Davenport, Nebraska. He passed away on July 5, 2010 at the Heritage Crossings in Geneva, Nebraska at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 6 days.
He grew up near Davenport, Nebraska attending grades one through 8 at the country school District 53 in Fillmore County, which is now St. James Church in Edgar. He attended high school in Davenport graduating in 1939. He was baptized and confirmed in Christ Lutheran Church. There he attended most of his life.
Bill worked in Omaha before enlisting in the Navy in 1942. After his naval training in Chicago, he served as a signalman of USS Bunker Hill mostly in the South Pacific until his ship was hit. In 1945, he was discharged. He attended Milford Trade School, learning the trade of a patternmaker. Working both at Western Land Roller in Hastings and Cushman Motors in Lincoln.
On October 22, 1950, he married Fern Sykes at Bethany Lutheran Church in the country south of Ruskin. Four children were born to this union. Linda, Lou, David and Keith. Having lived in Lincoln and Hastings for four years, they then moved to the farm and lived there 33 years. Bill retired in 1987 and moved to Davenport. It was there that he began his hobby of woodworking. He made furniture for the children and grandchildren.His pride and joy was the 3 story doll house that he made.
He was a life time member of American Legion and V.F.W. in Davenport and a past member of Ong Lions Club.
Family preceding him in death are parents, Quintin and Mabel Fisher; five brothers, Myron, Walter, Lewis, Joseph and Earl and one sister, Loretta Nelson.
He leaves to mourn, wife Fern; daughters, Linda Baker and husband Dave of Lincoln, Nebraska; Lou Skrdlant of Lincoln, Nebraska; sons, David Fisher and special friend Trudy McDermott of Ong, Nebraska; and Keith Fisher of Omaha, Nebraska; 8 grandchildren, Ben Baker and wife Jennifer of Lincoln, Nebraska; Kim Baker of Lincoln, Nebraska; Angie and Lindsey Skrdlant of Lincoln, Nebraska; Ryan Fisher and wife Cathy of Elkhorn, Nebraska; Jessie Fisher and wife Meghan of Omaha, Nebraska; Logan Fisher and fiance Heather of Kearney, Nebraska; and Christina Pitzer of Ong, Nebraska; 4 great-
grandchildren, Ryan, Kelly and Adrian Baker and Layla Fisher; 1 brother, Victor and wife Pauline of Kearney, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and host of friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 10:30 AM from the Christ Lutheran Church in Davenport, Nebraska with Pastor Amy Krejcarek officiating. Music was “Just As I Am, without One Plea,” “My Faith Looks Up To Thee,” and “How Great Thou Art,” with Deb Johnson as organist.
Pallbearers were Benjamin Baker, Kimberly Baker, Ryan Fisher, Jessie Fisher, Logan Fisher, Angela Skrdlant, Lindsey Skrdlant and Christina Pitzer.
Interment with full military rites was in the Davenport City Cemetery at Davenport, Nebraska.
