Christian Biography of Ferne Silsby Harris
Olive Ferne Harris, the daughter of James and Iva (Lamb) Silsby, was born on January 11, 1920 on the family farm near North Branch, Kansas. She passed away on July 17, 2010 at Brostone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 6 days.
Ferne was one of 10 children, she graduated from Burr Oak High School and was a member of the Burr Oak United Methodist Church. She was united in marriage to Lynn Ayers Harris on June 9, 1946 at the Burr Oak Methodist Parsonage. This union was blessed with 3 children, Lynda, Richard and Thomas. They lived and farmed on the White Rock Creek northeast of Burr Oak and in 2005 Ferne made the Jewell County Long Term Care her home.
During World War II she lived in Wichita, Kansas and worked as a Rosie the Riveter at the Boeing Aircraft Manufacturing Plant, riveting in the nose sections of B-29 bombers. Ferne was a member of the Methodist Church Women, Young Matrons Club and HDU. She was known for her exquisite country cooking, and was an accomplished seamstress and amateur artist and carpenter. She worked tirelessly for the church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lynn on September 12, 2000, 2 brothers, Doyle and Boyd Silsby and 4 sisters, Thelma Pierson, Glendora Paxton, Madeline Pinkston, and Belle Kandelin.
She is survived by her sons, Richard Harris and Thomas Harris and wife LuAnn all of Burr Oak, Kansas and daughter, Lynda Harris Myers Schreck and husband Charles of Emporia, Kansas; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, sisters, Berneice Silsby Harris and Edith Silsby Francis and husband Harold all of Burr Oak, Kansas and Mary Silsby Ohmstede of Guide Rock, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Charles Pinkston of Aurora, Colorado and sister-in-law, Donna Silsby of Mankato, Kansas; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
