Eldon R Sorensen, the son of Frits and Olga (Christensen) Sorensen, was born on November 12, 1926 on the family farm between Ruskin and Hardy, Nebraska. He passed away on January 14, 2012 at the Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, Nebraska at the age of 85 years, 2 months, 2 days.
Eldon attended the Summit Country School and graduated from Ruskin High School. He was baptized and confirmed at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin. On April 18, 1945 he was inducted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged on November 25, 1946. He was united in marriage to Fay Scattergood on September 11, 1949 at Eagle, Nebraska and to this union three children were born, Lynn, Lila and Larry.
Eldon was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, the Ruskin American Legion Kolling Post #242 and the Ruskin Lions Club serving as secretary. He also sang in the church choir and the men’s quartet and was a church council member. He farmed in the Ruskin area all his life and also worked at Hansen and Son Implement, Ruskin Implement and C&M Supply all of Ruskin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Fay on November 25, 2001.
He is survived by his children, Lynn Sorensen and wife Kathy of Ong, Nebraska, Lila Wilson and husband Wendell of Superior, Nebraska and Larry Sorensen and wife Kim of Hastings, Nebraska. Six grandchildren, Heather Sorensen, Brandon Sorensen, Amy Amen, Lindsey Wilson, Jennifer Quaife and Allen Bennetzen. Five great-grandchildren, Haylee and Shelby Wilson, Emma Gerloff, Parker Amen and Summer Gibsen. He is also survived by a brother Lyle Sorensen and wife Willa of Ruskin, Nebraska along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 2:00 pm from the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, Nebraska with Pastor Evelyn Phillips officiating.
Music was congregation hymns, “My Faith Looks Up To Thee” “Borning Cry” and “Amazing Grace” and a duet, “How Great Thou Art” with Wayne and DeeAnn Petersen singing and Dorcas Judy as organist and accompanist.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Pallbearers were Brandon Sorensen, Joe Amen, Robert Doran, Steve Thompson, Allen Bennetzen, Brady Pritchard, Phil Schoof and Steve Sorensen. Honorary pallbearers were Heather Sorensen, Amy Amen, Lindsey Wilson, Jenny Quaife, Megan McDowell, Haylee Wilson, Shelby Wilson, Emma Gerloff, Parker Amen and Summer Gibsen.
Interment with full military rites by the Ruskin Amercian Legion Kolling Post #242 1was in the Spring Creek Cemetery at Ruskin, Nebraska.
