Marie Mikkelsen
April 5, 2008

Christian Biography of Ruby Marie Mikkelsen

Marie was born on June 20, 1949 in a farm home northeast of Mankato Kansas in
Jewell County to Edwin and Neva (Fullerton) Wharton. She passed away on April 5,
2008 at her home in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 58 years, 9 months and 15 days.
At an early age she moved with her family to Clyde, Ks. This was where she first
went to Sunday School with a neighbor lady, which was the beginning of a strong
relationship with God that lasted her whole life. Her family then moved to Concordia
where Marie started school. In 1960 the family moved to Superior, Nebraska, Marie was
in the 6th Grade. She graduated from Superior High School with the class of 1967. While
in high school she was a letter girl (cheer leader) all four years as was her daughter
Katrina and now granddaughter Chari who is also a member of the present squad.
Her first jobs started in high school where she worked for the Kurly Kone and later the Crest
Theater which was when she met Gale. They were married September 3rd, 1967 and
began their married life in Ruskin in the first of many houses that they remodeled and
saved from destruction. Marie and Gale then moved to Superior and managed the Sale
Barn for a short time and Marie also worked for Ideal Market and ran the Sale Barn Cafe.
They moved back to Ruskin and Corey was born in 1969. That same year they had an
opportunity to buy a farm south of Ruskin and remodeled that home and lived there for
about 13 years. Marie was busy with raising a family as Jarod was born 1972 and
Katrina in 1973. In 1974 Marie and Gale started an auction house in Ruskin, and in 1976
Marie started a new and used furniture store along with the auction house. She sold the
furniture store out at the end of 1979 and bought a Restaurant in Deshler, Nebraska which
was renovated and named the Homestead Cafe. In 1981 the move was made to Superior
where they remained and moved the auction and real estate business in which Marie was
very much involved as a salesperson and office manager. Shortly after the move to
Superior, Marie started to manage some rental property and bought several rentals of her
own, of which her main purpose was to provide nice clean homes for people to live in.
She also had a unique gift of decorating homes both inside and out. Marie was a
Enterpreneur and was the backbone for several Superior businesses including Mikkelsen
Home Furnishings established in 1988 and operated by Marie and oldest son Corey. In

reopened the restaurant as the Hilltop Diner. This was a venture that the whole family
participated in its daily operations. In 1993, Marie opened the first fitness center, Body
Works at the old candy store on 10th and North Dakota Street. After the family was
raised Marie pursued buying and fixing and moving in to various Victorian style homes.
Marie fell in love with one particular house, The Moore Home that she first bought in
1990, they renovated it and moved in but shortly resold the property. Several other
homes were purchased , renovated and sold. Then one day Gale came home from work
and Marie told him she had bought the Moore house back and although Marie insisted
that she was going to fix it up for a Bed and Breakfast, Gale knew they would eventually
settle back in this house which is their present home in which Marie was so content and
very happy. Marie was very involved in youth activities from managing the skating rink
to teen dances and even throwing Halloween parties at the city auditorium. Marie was a
remarkable person with many talents. Her first love was of God and then family,
followed by friendships. Gale and Marie felt so fortunate to have been able to do some
extensive traveling before Marie became ill. Even the last few years Marie was able to
make the annual visit to Branson Missouri and to her beloved mountain retreat in Estes
Park. Colorado with all the children and Grandchildren. The Thompson Canyon drive to
Estes was her favorite ride. She felt closer to God there. Until this last year she was able
to participate in all the activities of bumper boats, go carts, tram ride to feed the ground
squirrels. Horse back trail rides, and of course Trail Ridge Road and Fall River Road, and
a walk around Bear Lake. Marie’s favorite was her annual Birthday Supper at the
