Yale Meyer
February 19, 2010
Christian Biography of Yale A. Meyer
Yale August Meyer, the son of Werner August and Frieda (Heumann) Meyer, was born on February 5, 1921 on a farm in Seward County near Goehner, Nebraska. He passed away on February 19, 2010 at Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Nebraska
at the age of 89 years, and 14 days.
Yale attended rural schools and graduated from Beaver Crossing High School in1938. During these years Yale assisted his parents with the family farm and even left school for a time in his 6th grade year to help out when the depression hit. These
experiences made getting an education very important to him. During World War II, Yale
was drafted into the army and served in the hospital on the Island of Tinian in the Pacific
Ocean. He was discharged from the service in 1946. Always good at planning ahead, Yale
used the GI Bill to further his education by enrolling in electrical engineering at the
University of Nebraska. Yale graduated in 1950 with his Bachelor of Science Degree and
then started his career as a Professional Electrical Engineer with South Central Public Power District in Nelson.
Another brilliant planning decision followed as he wooed the much younger LaVera Schmidt who was also in the South Central work force. Their wedding on June 28, 1953 lead to a lifelong partnership of 56 years. As the manager of South Central, Yale
was a pioneer in irrigation load management. This problem solving talent was always in use as he enjoyed having issues bounced off him from his family, friends, and co workers.
The learning did not stop with retirement as he and LaVera enjoyed many trips to locations such as Russia, Germany, Alaska, Hawaii, and even the Panama Canal. The urge to farm also was satisfied with use of the “North 40" ground near their home in Nelson. He also loved to tinker and fix things at his own patient pace.
In the end, it always comes down to family. Yale and LaVera were most proud of their family. They were raised in a loving, respectful, joke loving, patience learning and
pinochle playing environment. His grandchildren always brought a sparkle to grandpa’s eyes. We have all benefitted from grandpa’s planning, caring, and ability to always do the
right thing, while not being tempted by the easiest or fastest path.
He was a member of the Nelson Community United Church of Christ, American Legion Post #187, VFW Post #7197, the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, Inc., University of Nebraska Alumni Association and Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers.
Preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Alta Zillig. and Nelda Stuchlik, brother, Kermit.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 2:00 PM from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska with Rev. Dr. Stephen Berry officiating. Lela M. Van Meter
January 20, 2010
Christian Biography of Lela M. Van Meter
Lela May Van Meter, the daughter of Ernest and Anna L. (Humeston) Graham, was born on May 23, 1928 at Webber, Kansas. She passed away on January 20, 2010 at the Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia, Kansas at the age of 81 years.
Lela attended school at Lovewell, Mankato and Webber, Kansas. On November 11, 1945 she was united in marriage to Ivan Van Meter at Mankato, Kansas and to this union were born 5 children.
After moving to the farm in 1958, Lela devoted her life to her family and her full time job as a farm wife and mother. With 5 children to care for, she still baked bread every single day, butchered chickens and canned hundreds of quarts of vegetables and meat. Her famous potato salad was on order for every family gathering.Even with all of that, Lela made beautiful quilts and hand stitched embroidered tea towels and pot holders, an art she learned from her mother. Her daughter and daughters-in-law fought over her hand stitched pot holders. She also heard her sons many hunting stories, each told a hundred times over.
Lela was a member of Lovewell Junior Library Club and the United Methodist Church. A place she really tried to convince 4 little ornery boys they needed to go to no avail.
Lela loved people and loved to laugh. With this family she had to laugh or go crazy!
Ivan and Lela bought and ran the Lovewell Marina for several years and later the Webber Service Station. After Ivan’s passing, Lela took on a full time job as postmistress in Webber. She valued the job opportunity and was proud of her work.
As the years went by Lela doted on grandchildren and great grandchildren. The handiwork she learned from her mother kept her busy quilting, embroidery, tea towels and pot holders.
Love bloomed once again for Lela when she ran into an old friend, Harry Robinson. He was her constant companion and friend right up to the very end. They were truly devoted to each other and her face lit up when he walked into the room. Harry was a blessing to both Lela and the family.
We want all to know that Mom truly blessed our family and she will be forever missed.
Lela was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ivan on May 20, 2001, two sisters, Helen Wilson and Lois Elneff and two brothers, Rex Graham and Donald Graham.
