Christian Biography of Elizabeth "Betty" Ann (Woerner) Carter Betty Ann Carter, the daughter of Robert and Carmitia (Bush) Woerner, was born on November 14, 1918 in Superior, Nebraska. She passed away on February 25, 2014 in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 95 years, 3 months, 11 days. Betty Ann was one of four children. She graduated from Superior High School and held a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Nebraska. In addition, she took course work at Harvard University. She married the love of her life Leonard Willy on September 27, 1940 in Denver, Colorado and to this union Joyce Marie was born. He was tragically killed in an auto-train accident that also severely injured Betty Ann and Joyce. She married Carroll Carter on October 11, 1947 in Wahoo, Nebraska. Betty Ann loved children and wanted a large family. When that was not possible, she dedicated herself to helping children and the hearing impaired. Betty Ann served as Executive Director of Girl Scouts Councils in Omaha, Nebraska and Central New Jersey, and as a staff member of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. based in Boston, Massachusetts. She was Executive Director of the YWCA in Denver, Colorado. Her professional career spanned more than thirty years in administration and education. She retired and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1981 with her daughter Joyce and husband Marvin. Because of her own hearing impairment, she became involved in and taught lip reading for 13 years to hard-of-hearing and deaf adolescents and adults at Scottsdale Community College and throughout the greater Phoenix area. She developed her own curriculum and teaching methods based on her research and experience, and wrote a book entitled "I Can't Hear You In The Dark." Betty Ann believed in the power of giving back to the community and donated to many worthy causes throughout her life. Some of the organizations close to her heart were: Girl Scouts, YWCA, Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, Superior Public Schools Foundation, Audubon Society, International Quilt Study Center and Museum at UNL, United Methodist Church of Superior Bell Choir, and Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Betty Ann loved attending the theater with family and friends. Many times she would coordinate a group to read the play before going to the performance due to her hearing impairment. She was an avid reader of current affairs, fierce Scrabble player, and loved to travel, sharing stories of her adventures. She also enjoyed a daily swim in the pool at her Scottsdale home. Betty Ann became a resident of Brookdale Place Assisted Living in 2011, residing there until her passing. She was a long-time member of the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church. Betty Ann lifted the spirits and inspired those whom she touched, and lived life to the fullest. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Leonard and Carroll; daughter Joyce, brothers Mitchell and Pleasant Woerner and sisters-in-law Katherine, Helen and Darlene Woerner. She is survived by her son-in-law Marvin Reedy of Scottsdale, Arizona; brother Robert Woerner of Superior, Nebraska; nieces and nephews: Mitchie (Cheryl) Woerner of Mankato, Kansas, James (Becky) Woerner of Nelson, Nebraska, Larry Woerner of Superior, Nebraska, John (Linda) Woerner of Jewell, Kansas, Pat (Roger) Landauer of Salina, Kansas, Linda (Terry) Hall of Hastings, Nebraska, Duane (Barbara) Woerner of Superior, Nebraska, Beverly (Richard) Mayfield of Beatrice, Nebraska, Marsha (Jeff) Kinyoun of Superior, Nebraska and Beth Woerner of Des Moines, Iowa; special friends JoAnne Smith of Chandler, Arizona and Jim and Pam Poley of Phoenix, Arizona; other relatives and a host of friends. Since Betty Ann valued education, in lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in her honor to the Girls Scouts, YWCA or Superior Public Schools Foundation.

A Celebration of Life service was held Wednesday, March 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church Chapel, Paradise Valley, Arizona with Pastor Eve Williams officiating.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor Mark Diehl officiating.
