Christian Biography of Carol Lucille Shambaugh

Carol Lucile Shambaugh, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends and favorite dog, Ruger, at Bryan Medical Center East on Friday, August 21, 2026. She was born on November 27, 1943, to Eugene and Velma (Bailey) Sullivan.  She was the ninth of 12 children. Carol was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Superior.

Carol attended Beaverville School until 8th grade, then attended Superior High School, graduating in 1961. She met Roland "Short" Shambaugh and they got engaged on her 19th birthday.  Her dad said she had to be 20 to get married so on November 27, 1963, they became the 1st wedding in the brand-new St. Joseph Catholic Church. To this union, two daughters were born, Monica and Mary. They celebrated 61 years of marriage prior to Short's death on May 23, 2024.

Carol held many jobs in Superior to include Chard Drug Store, Hill Oil Company, Brodstone Memorial Hospital, The Eagles Club and Mid-Nebraska Individual Services. She was a hard worker and held part-time jobs in the evenings and weekends at Pat and Vern's/Dave's and the VFW and was an on-call jailer at the Superior City Jail.

Carol's greatest learning accomplishment was becoming an EMT and she served on the Superior Volunteer Rescue Squad for 35 years. She was a requested vocalist and sang for countless funerals and weddings. Her rendition of the "Our Father" and "Footprints" could make you cry. She is fondly remembered dancing with Short, the variety shows she helped to create and participate in, inviting all to have a great time at the cabin, taking care of everyone and how fun she made every event when you heard her laugh. Carol is preceded in death by Short, her parents and in-laws, James and Lynn Shambaugh, siblings, Mary (Bill) Mallam, Joe Sullivan, sisters-in-law Julene Sullivan, Gayle Sullivan and brothers-in-law, Joe Kripal and Joe Diekemper, and special friend Jan Ziegler.

Survivors include daughters Monica Shambaugh and wife Kathy of Scottsbluff and Mary Mitchell and husband Eric of Hebron; six grandchildren: Joshua Shambaugh, Colby (Stephanie) Holtzen Mitchell, Michelle (Jake) Campbell, Charlie Mitchell, Erik Melvin and Sarah (Alan) Maisonet; four great-grandchildren, Kyson and Theodore Holtzen Mitchell and Jackson and Samantha Maisonet ; siblings John (Marlice) Sullivan, Ruth Kripal, Richard Sullivan, Francis Sullivan, Mike (Jan) Sullivan, Pat Diekemper, Kathy (Kevin) Bargen, sister-in-law Lois Sullivan along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday September 3, 2026, at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Superior, Nebraska with Rev. Adam Sparling and Rev. Steven Major officiating. Lector will be Lane Hawley, Acolyte will be Andrew Brittenham and Altar Servers will be Abram Carter and Noah Brittenham.

Booking Signing will be available in the Sanctuary on Wednesday, with family greeting friends in the basement from 5-7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with rosary recited at 7:00 pm in the Church.

Inurnment in the Guide Rock Cemetery in Guide Rock, Nebraska at a later date.
