Christian Biography of Carolyn (Junk) Sumpter

Carolyn L. (Junk) Sumpter was born on April 18th, 1932 on a farm near Tipton, Kansas to John and Susan (Streit) Junk. She passed from this earth and into the arms of Jesus on October 10th, 2013 in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 22 days.

Carolyn was the third of ten children. She wanted to go to school with her older siblings and finally her parents let her begin kindergarten at the age of four. She graduated from Tipton High School and attended Marymount College in Salina, Kansas for clerical studies. These studies would later land her a position at a hospital in Hays, Kansas.

Carolyn met the love of her life at the Downs, Kansas skating rink. Wesley Sumpter skated up to her and said, how about a skate teach? Carolyn's sister was the teacher but regardless the connection was made between Carolyn and Wesley and their love endured for almost sixty years. They were married on July 2nd, 1951 in San Diego, California. To this union seven children were born.

Carolyn lived for her family, each child and grandchild had their own special place in Grandma's heart. She was always kind, even in the face of adversity and she judged no one. She enjoyed and loved her family most but also her friends, flowers and yard. Although she was not able to get out as much as she would have liked during the past summer, her flowers were, and will be a constant reminder of her beauty.

Through the years Carolyn's most important and meaningful position was being a housewife, mom and grandma. She re-entered the work force when her youngest child was headed to first grade and was a loyal and treasured employee of Leprino Cheese, The Good Samaritan Home and her most enjoyable and final position outside the home was at Hob Nob Liquor. She was a people person and felt everyone was interesting and special in their own way.

Those preceding her in death include her husband (March 27th, 2010), a grandson Cyrus Thornton, her parents, six brothers- John, Raymond, Pete, Fred, Gene and Ronnie and a sister, Rosemary Dreiling.

Leaving to mourn include her children Twauna Tuel (Abe) of Portland, Oregon, Colin Sumpter (Barb) of Hastings, Nebraska, Shawn Sumpter of Lincoln, Nebraska, Nancy Chenell of Lincoln, Nebraska, Judy Kachanes of Great Bend, Kansas, Jeanne Phillips (Robert) of Boise, Idaho and James Sumpter (Katie) of Superior, Nebraska. Thirteen grandchildren, George, Shawna, Karie, Amanda, Stuart, Shawn, Aaron, Kirsten, Stacey, Jacob, Clara, Ransom and Emily. Also five great-grandchildren, Justin, Jayden, Davin, Carson and George. A sister Madelyn Patton of Columbus, Ohio, a brother Marvin Junk of Downs, Kansas, a sister-in law Maxine Yunk of Hutchinson, Kansas, a sister-in law Violet Junk of Osborne, Kansas, a brother-in law Julius Dreiling of Victoria, Kansas and a brother-in-law Rex Sumpter of Downs, Kansas also survive. Carolyn is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends whom she loved dearly. She will be missed by all.

Carolyn's wishes were for no final services and for everyone to remember happy times spent together. Her memory would be better honored by sharing a memory or thought.

A graveside service will be held at a later date. The family prefers not to receive flowers.
