Christian Biography of David W. Watters

On December 13, 1939, David W. Watters was given life by his Creator in Tecumseh, NE to Charles F. Watters and Othlia (Hines) Watters.  He was baptized in Christ as an infant in Crab Orchard, Nebraska.  The Watters family lived in various communities in Nebraska including Guide Rock where David graduated from Guide Rock High School in 1956.  After high school, David had various jobs including:  State of Nebraska Dept. of Roads, Hardy Elevator, Thompson Brothers of Guide Rock, wheat harvest crew, J.P. Nielsen Service Station, and Ideal Market.

On September 8, 1960, David married Carol Giger of Superior, NE at First Baptist Church in Belleville, KS.  The newlyweds then attended Fairbury Junior College and upon receiving their Associates degrees, they both transferred to Kearney State College where David received his Bachelor of Arts in Education.  After graduation, they moved to Superior, NE where David began his educational career as Junior High Social Studies teacher and coach before becoming the Principal of Superior High School.  It was during this time he received the Jaycees Young Educators Award.  He continued his vocation as Principal throughout school districts in Nebraska which included Wood River High School, York Middle School, and St. Paul High School.  He began his first Superintendent's position at Davenport Public Schools in 1988.  He later served as Superintendent of Beemer Public Schools, with his 37 year educational career culminating at Sterling Public Schools in 2002.  David belonged to the Nebraska Education Association and Nebraska Council of School Administrators

In addition to education, David was a lay minister in multiple churches in Nebraska and Kansas.  Upon retirement from education, he then became the minister of Olive Hill Church, Superior, NE where he served God for 15 years before retiring in May of 2017.

Finally, on October 19, 2017 God blessed David with a holy death and took him home to rest in the arms of Jesus to await the resurrection of the dead.

David enjoyed being a servant of God, husband, father of 3 children, grandfather to 9 children, and friends to many.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, son Tim (Genie) of Panama, NE, son Scott (Teresa) of Winside, NE, daughter JeNae (Randy) Kort of Fairbury, NE,and 9 grandchildren:  Garrett (Ellyn) Watters, Anna Watters, Christian Watters, Brandon Watters, Andi Kort, Ram Watters, Ally Kort, and Anslee Watters, sister-in-law Janice Miller, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles F and Othlia Watters, parents-in-law Elmer and Ruth Giger, sister and brother-in-law Alice Mae and Bill Bishop, brother Charles Jr. sister-in-law Orla Rousseau, and brother-in-law Richard Miller.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 10:00 am from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Nebraska with David Johnson officiating.

Music was "Nearer My God To Thee," "His Eye Is On The Sparrow," and "What A Lovely Name" duets by Gloria-Garman-Schlaefli and Bev Frost with Carlita Price as accompanist. Congregational hymn of "Amazing Grace" was sung.

Pallbearers were Tim Watters, Scott Watters, Randy Kort, Garrett Watters, Brandon Watters, Christian Watters, Ram Watters, Floyd Rothfuss and Steve Henderson. Honorary Pallbearers were Bruce Maschmann, Gordon Eggers, Kevin Madsen, Chris Sluka, Ken Babcock and Greg Peterson.

Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska.

Memorials are suggested to go to the Olive Hill Church, the Crest Theater or the Auditorium Renovation Fund.
