DIANA LOUISE SWIFT HALLGRIMSON
Diana Louise Swift Hallgrimson, 78, of Lake Tapawingo was born Nov. 14, 1936, in Sioux City, Iowa. She went to heaven on Friday, April 24, 2015, at St. Mary's Hospital.
Diana received her RN degree in 1957 from St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo. In 1958 she married William Wendt and from this union had three sons, Bill, Jim and Mark. While in school, she competed and won Miss Missouri in 1958 and went on to win Mrs. Missouri in 1961. Furthermore, in 1961, she also competed for Mrs. America and was 3rd runner-up. After graduating from nursing school, she worked as a scrub nurse in Springfield for eight years. She earned a B.S. degree in education in 1974 and continued to work in the health care profession. She also wrote the Health Careers Program for the Shawnee Mission school district. Then, at the age of 64, she went back to school to earn her master's degree in family counseling. After graduating, she worked at St. Mary's Hospital as a grief counselor until 2012.
Diana loved and lived life to the fullest. She was such an amazing woman and has touched so many lives. We are inspired by her dedication and willingness to be the best that one can be and to never give up. She will be greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Durwood and Mildred Swift and step-son, Brian Hills.
She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Jene Hallgrimson of the home; three sons, Bill Wendt of California; Jim Wendt and wife Suzanne of KCK; Mark Wendt and wife Shari of Chanute, Kan.; her step- children, Craig Hills and wife Dana of Independence, Mo., and Andrea Flowers and husband Scott of Lee's Summit, Mo.; and 17 grandchildren plus six great-grandchildren.
Service: 1:30 p.m. at Newcomer's Funeral Home, 509 S. Noland Rd, Independence, MO 64050 (816) 252-8900.
Burial: at the Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 831 Quivira Rd, Lenexa, KS 66215.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Wayside Waifs Humane Society, 3901 Martha Truman Rd, Kansas City, MO 64137 (816) 761-8151.
