Christian Biography of Gilbert J. Smidt

Gilbert John Smidt, son of Klaus and Leona (Beyke) Smidt, was born on September 20, 1935 at Hastings, Nebraska. He passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at his home in Superior at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 27 days.

Gilbert was one of four children. He lived in Hastings, Nebraska and Mankato, Kansas before moving with his family to Superior, Nebraska where he attended school graduating from Superior High School with the class of 1953. He was inducted into the United States Army on December 9, 1958 stationed in Germany. While in the service on May 4, 1959 he was united in marriage to DeEtte Schlick at Harvard, Nebraska. This union was blessed with five children. He was honorably discharged from the service on November 25, 1960. They returned to Superior where they lived for 3 years, working construction with his Dad, Klaus, the family then moved to Holdrege where he worked as a scale officer for the State of Nebraska, after 9 years they returned to Superior where he worked with his brothers at MGM construction and was a part time employee for Megrue-Price Funeral Home and Crest Theatre for many years.

Gilbert was a member of the Lions Club, Eagles Club serving as past president, Knights of Columbus serving as a past Grand Knight and an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church; he also was a 10 year EMT member.

His hobbies included fishing, wood working and camping. He loved to attend his grandkids sporting activities and he enjoyed helping local farmers with their harvest and going to coffee with his fellow friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Melvin and sister Linda Mazour and grandson Kalen Schiermeyer.

He is survived by his wife, DeEtte, his children Kimberly Creamer and husband Gene of Omaha, Nebraska, Kurtis and wife Karen of Owasso, Oklahoma, Kelly Schiermeyer and husband Allen of Nelson, Nebraska, Karla Blackstone and husband Barry of Superior, Nebraska and Kyle and wife Kathy of Kearney, Nebraska; nine grandchildren: Brian, Bradley, Sarah, Kristopher, Kendra, Eric, Madison, Conner and Ashlyn and two step-grandchildren: Jillian and Taylor; brother Marvin and wife Marietta of Superior, Nebraska: sister-in-law Janice Smidt of Superior; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 10:00 AM from the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Superior, Nebraska with Father Brad Zitek officiating. Lector was granddaughter, Kendra Schiermeyer and Altar Servers were Jared Dressman and Ben Price.

Music was "Footprints in the Sand," "Here I Am Lord," "One Day at A Time," and "I Will Follow," with Stephanie Thayer as soloist and Carlita Erickson as organist.

Rosary Service was on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 7:00 PM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Visitation was held on Thursday 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Funeral Home and Friday 1:00 PM until rosary service at St. Joseph's Catholic Church

Pallbearers were Brent Smidt, Todd Smidt, Ryan Smidt, Gregg Smidt, Kevin Smidt, and Blake Smidt. Honorary Pallbearers were Brian Sullivan, Bradley Sullivan, Kristopher Smidt, Eric Schiermeyer and Conner Blackstone.

Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska.
