Christian Biography of Ila Callaway

Ila Marie Callaway, the daughter of Ralph and Anna (Ross) Graham, was born on August 5, 1918 on a farm near Webber, Kansas. She passed away on September 29, 2013 at Jewell County Hospital in Mankato, Kansas at the age of 95 years, 1 months, 24 days.

Ila attended school in Webber, Kansas. She was currently a member of the Methodist Church of Esbon. On March 11, 1936 at Beloit, Kansas she was united in marriage to Jessie (Jake) Callaway and to this union was born three children.

Ila lived in the communities of Esbon, Webber and Mankato, Kansas. She loved playing cards with her family and friends, was a member of the Happy Hour Club, enjoyed the many family reunions held in South Padre Island, Texas, Las Cruces, New Mexico, Kansas City, Kansas and Salina, Kansas. She had a love for baseball, especially the Kansas City Royals.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jake on December 24, 1968, one son, Richard (Dick) Callaway and his wife Jane, son-in-law, Stan Umphenour, grandson, Charles (Chuck) Callaway, a great-grandson, Justin Barrett and eight brothers, Dale, Lawrence, John, Charles, Clyde, Kermit, Maurice and Melvin.

She is survived by her daughter Alberta Umphenour Baldwin Park, California and her son, Burdette Callaway and wife Janie of Esbon, Kansas. 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Mildred Heflin of McAllen, Texas and Norma Ridle of Lincoln, Nebraska along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 10:30 am from the Prairie Home Cemetery in Esbon, Kansas with Pastor Gerry Sharp officiating.

Music was recordings of "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace".

Visitation was held on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm with the family greeting friends.

Pallbearers were Rick Callaway, David Callaway, Brett Callaway, Tyson Callaway, Brian Callaway and Logan Wedel.

Interment was in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Esbon, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to go to the Esbon Methodist Church, the Diabetes Foundation or the Jewell County Long Term Care.
