Ivan Gharring, age 97 of Sheridan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at the Laurels of Carson City.

Born almost a century ago, Ivan saw many changes throughout his lifetime and he also witnessed many things come and go. However, during that same time two things remained the same and constant, Ivan's work ethic and commitment. A person needs to look no further than his marriage of over 78 years to his wife Verleen as a shining example of his level of commitment and dedication. Ivan's work ethic started back when at the young age of 16, he not only graduated high school, but began his lifelong work as a farmer. For 60+ years Ivan was an active Mason and for many years also a member of the Shriners. Having been born and raised in Nebraska, Ivan was a diehard Nebraska Football fan! In his younger days, he liked being outdoors, hunting, fishing and golfing. Ivan also loved playing cards with his friends and was a regular at the morning coffee shops. After his retirement, Ivan and Verleen traveled extensively throughout the US and Mexico in their RV and created lots of special memories. Ivan will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

Surviving Ivan is his wife, Verleen of Sheridan; daughter, DeeAnn (Bill) Piper of Sheridan; grandsons, Chad (Martha) Piper of Holt; Dr. Travis (Dr. Michelle) Piper of North Muskegon; great grandchildren, Allie Piper; Tess Piper; Rem Piper all of Holt, Lindsey Piper and Eliza Piper both of North Muskegon and several nieces and nephews.

Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred & Aletha (Morehead) Gharring; son, Ladd Gharring and granddaughter, Nicole Rene Piper.

Verleen Gharring February 14, 1922 ~ June 30, 2022

Verleen M. Gharring, age 100, of Sheridan, passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at the Laurels of Carson in Carson City.

Originally from Nelson, Nebraska, Verleen and her late husband, Ivan, moved to the Sheridan area in the late 1990's. Verleen taught in a one room schoolhouse for two years teaching 1st through 8th grades and then worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service division. In 1941 Verleen married Ivan Gharring and they were married for 78 years, until his passing in 2020. Verleen was a member of the Eastern Stars for over 60 years and served as Worthy Matron. A great hostess, Verleen was always entertaining and a great cook. Everyone was always amazed and impressed with what she could make with a paint brush, glue stick, and some glitter; and Verleen never sat down without some sort of project in her hand and enjoyed making things for friends and family. She loved to decorate for the holidays and was always ready for everyone to come over. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. Verleen's family would like to thank the staff at Laurels of Carson for the wonderful care they provided to her these past few years.

Verleen is survived by her daughter, DeeAnn (Bill) Piper of Sheridan; grandsons, Chad (Martha) Piper of Lansing; Dr. Travis (Dr. Michelle) Piper of North Muskegon; great grandchildren, Allie (Nate) Fodrill, Tess Piper, Rem Piper, Lindsey Piper, and Eliza Piper; sister, Shirley Whartman of Kimball, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.

Verleen was preceded in death by her parents, Con & Elma (VanDyke) Whiteley; husband, Ivan Gharring; son, Ladd Gharring; sister, Floy Jensen; and granddaughter, Nicole Rene Piper.
