Christian Biography of Joan Merryman Miller

Joan Miller, the daughter of Maynard and Lucy (Fisher) Merryman, was born on January 27, 1937 near Martland, Nebraska. She passed away on February 22, 2017 at her residence in Shickley, Nebraska, at the age of 80 years, and 26 days.

Joan grew up near Martland, and attended country school, graduating from Shickley High School and she also attended the Wesleyan University. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shickley. Joan taught school for 6 years, before getting married on August 4, 1959, to Bernard J. Miller at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Geneva. They lived in Geneva for a short time before moving to Lincoln, where she was employed at Wynn Friction Proofing. Their children were both born in Lincoln, after which they then moved to a farm near Shickley, where she helped with whatever Bern was working on, which included, chores, hauling hay bales, moving irrigation pipes and make their house a home, she was always by his side helping. She owned and operated a shoe store in Geneva; and on the sideline, sold Avon products for close to 50 years. She was a very kind hearted person, devoted wife, mother and friend to everyone she met. Together, they loved to travel in their RV, keeping in touch with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maynard and Lucy.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard of Shickley, Nebraska; son, James "Jim" Miller and wife Kim of Shickley, Nebraska and daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Webb and husband Bob of Fort Collins, Colorado; 10 grandchildren: Jameson, Huntington, Alexis, Cody and wife Melissa, Drew, Courtney and Shalee and husband Cody, Austin and wife Jill, Patrick and Andrew; 2 great-grandchildren; her brother, Don Merryman of Iowa City, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Bernice Miller, Rita Miller, Rose Rowley, Betty Mazour and husband Jerome; brothers-in-law, Alfred Miller and wife Agnes, Wilfred Miller and wife Helen all of Superior, Nebraska and sister-in-law, Marge Hulet of Whitehall, Michigan; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shickley, Nebraska, with Father Scott Courtney officiating. Lector was Arnold Miller, Acolyte was Jerry Miller, Altar Servers were Isaac & Josiah Kamler.

Music was congregational hymns, "Amazing Grace," and "One Day at a Time," and solos of "Thank You," and "On Eagle's Wings,"  with Carol Grote as the organist and Ivan Miller and Mike Miller as the vocalists.

Book signing 9:00 AM before the service with the Rosary being recited at 10:30 AM.

Honorary Pallbearers were Jameson, Huntington, Alexis, Cody, Drew, Courtney, Shalee, Austin, Patrick and Andrew.

Inurnment was in the Stockholm Cemetery, Shickley, Nebraska.

A memorial has been established and may go in care of the family.
