Christian Biography of Joe L Doyle

Joe L Doyle, the son of Ross and Etha (Carter) Doyle, was born on August 2, 1936 in Santo, Texas. He passed away on October 16, 2019 at the St Francis Medical Center at Grand Island, Nebraska at the age of 83 years, 2 months, 14 days.

Joe grew up knowing what poor was. When they moved to Oklahoma, he told us about living in a tent. They were excited when their second tent had a wooden floor and a potbelly stove in it. They thought they had a mansion. Joe's family moved to Nebraska, where he attended school in Hardy and Guide Rock.

He started at an early age of knowing how to work. When his family lived in Guide Rock, Joe had a paper route. The two guys from the hardware store thought he needed a bike for his route and they helped in financing one for him. He had to pay a dollar a week. He was very proud of his new Schwin bike. Dropping out of school early, he would hitch hike from Guide Rock to Superior to wash dishes at a café. He didn't have to walk much, people were glad to stop and give him a ride. One guy who also worked in Superior would wait for him to get done and give him a ride home.

On April 1, 1956 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Montgomery at the Methodist Church in Superior. This union was blessed with 3 children.

He loved to work in the dirt. He worked on the canal from Hardy to Superior. Both him and his dad worked on the Lovewell Lake Dam. He also worked on the Red Willow at McCook, Norton Dam and Reservoir, canals at Cambridge, Railroad right away north of Waconda Lake, and Rathun Dam in Centerville, Iowa.

Moving back to Kansas in 1969, Joe worked for Jewell County for a year. He started work at the cement plant in 1971 up until its closing. Then buying his own equipment to start his business of Doyle's Construction, which was a family business, whether you were a son, son-in-law or grandson, you helped Dad by moving equipment or working on it. Joe wasn't a quitter, even after breaking his neck, he still had to try and go out there and work. Selling his equipment, he had to help the buyer out. It was very difficult for him to retire in 2016.

Joe was a member of the Church of Christ. He owned and operated Doyle's Construction until his retirement. He lived in the states of Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and retiring in Superior. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren, going to coffee and visiting with his friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Phyllis on March 14, 2011; and his sister Barbara Gadberry.

Survivors include his children Rebecca "Becky" Behrends and husband Glen of Courtland, Kansas; Darrell of Superior, Nebraska and Rhonda Elledge and husband Steve of Webber, Kansas; 4 grandchildren: Nicholas Elledge and wife Laura of Nelson, Nebraska; Crystal Meyer and husband Matthew and Brett Behrends and wife Leslie all of Webber, Kansas; and Kendra Lipker and husband Derek of Superior, Nebraska; 8 great grandchildren: Nathan, Jasper and Laney Elledge, Brayton and Kaelyn Meyer, Brynley and Baylor Behrends and Logan Lipker; his brothers James and wife Miriam of Guide Rock, Nebraska and Larry and wife Pnut of Anderson, Missouri and his sister Audyne Delka and husband Neil of Roanoke, Texas; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 21, 2019 at 10:30 AM from the Church of Christ in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor Mike Sander officiating.

Music was "The Old Rugged Cross," "I Can Only Imagine," and "Walking Over Heaven With You," with Deb and Kate Brown as the vocalists and Paula Renz as their accompanist.

Visitation was held on Sunday from 1-8 with the family present from 6-8 to greet friends.

Pallbearers were Nicholas Elledge, Brett Behrends, Matt Meyer, Derek Lipker, Nathan Elledge and Logan Lipker. Honorary Pallbearers were Gene Alexander, Jim Mitchell, John Combs, Roy Drapal, Wayne Adams and Bob Ahrens.

Interment was in the Webber Cemetery at Webber, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family which will be distributed to the Nebraska Food Pantry, Cross Roads, and the Alpha Christians Home.
