Christian Biography of John Charles Ensign

John Charles Ensign, the son of Raymond and Irene Ensign (Vilhauer) Ensign, was born on July 3, 1959 in Akron, Colorado. He passed away on October 17, 2017 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 58 years, 3 months, 14 days.

John was a 1977 Nelson High School graduate. His father was an ordained minister, so the family lived in many communities including Akron, Colorado; Lenexa, Kansas; Clinton, Oklahoma, Adams, Nebraska and settling in Nelson, Nebraska. He was united in marriage to Vicki Thornberry on November 27, 1976 at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Superior, Nebraska. This union was blessed with 2 daughters, Jessi and Kelly.

John was employed as an office manager for South Central P.P.D. in Nelson, until his health forced him to retire. While living in the Nelson community, John was active member of the Nelson Community Club and was a school board member. He helped coach High School football until 2009, he ran the clock for home basketball games, umpired baseball and softball games. He loved fishing, and had the most fun in Alabama.

John was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki of Nelson; daughters Jessi Hoeft and husband Nathan of Hastings, Nebraska and Kelly Karr and husband William of Blue Hill, Nebraska; 2 grandsons, Caleb and Jacob Karr; siblings, Phyllis Buss and husband Norman of Eagle, Nebraska; Jeanette Flaming and husband Clayton of Cantonment, Florida and LeAnn Ensign of Hastings, Nebraska; and brother-in-law Randi Thornberry of Clay Center, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Celebration of Life service was held on Monday, October 23, 2017 at 2:00 pm from the Salem Lutheran Church in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor Kathryn Bates and Pastor Ethan Feistner officiating.

Music was "Saved" and "I Will Always Love You" provided by Stephanie Thayer and Tom Jensen.

Book signing was held on Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00pm with the family present to greet friends from 5-7.

Pallbearers were Wayne Garrison, Mike Hicks, John Feistner, Boyd McCartney, Randi Thornberry, Royce Schott, Bob Byrkit, and Randy Garvin. Honorary Pallbearers were Emily Garrison, Gabe Bargen, Nick Garrison, Shona Rush, Shelby Feistner, Mackenzie McCartney, Addison McCartney, Molly McCartney and Annie McCartney.

Private Family inurnment was in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson, Nebraska.
