Christian Biography of Larry Sather

Larry Douglas Sather died on June 4, 2012, at Bryan Memorial LGH Hospital in Lincoln, NE at the age of 61 years, 7 months, 22 days, of heart failure. He was born October 13, 1950, in Huron, South Dakota to Marvin and Marion (Jacobson) Sather.

From the third grade on Larry and his brothers were brought up in Loup City, NE, which provided him the opportunity to experience both rural and town life. Larry was active in athletics, especially football and track, and in band, student government, Scouts, 4-H and other activities. As a young boy he and his brothers raised rabbits, three coyotes, a raccoon and a spitz-collie. In his senior year of high school at Loup City he was elected President of his class, an honor he always cherished.


Larry went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with degrees in Business Management in 1972 and a Juris Doctorate in Law in 1975. He helped put himself through college by working construction in Nebraska and roughnecking on oil rigs in Utah.


After serving as an Adams County Deputy District Attorney in Denver and then for many years in private practice as a trial attorney, he graduated from the Daniels College MBA program at the University of Denver in 2002. Larry was admitted to the bar in Nebraska, Colorado and Texas and joined a variety of professional organizations ranging from the International Bar Association to the National Association of Defense Attorneys and the American Arbitration Association, among others.


His legal practice emphasized trial work in insurance, medical, hospital and legal malpractice as well as in other civil and criminal litigation during more than three hundred jury trials and various arguments before Supreme Courts and Courts of Appeal. Larry's practice included both private law and arbitration.

While living in Denver, Larry and his first wife, Pam, married and had three children, Lindsey, Kaelin and Ryan. During this stage his athletic interests had broadened to include out-of-bounds skiing, distance bicycling, mountain hiking and half-marathons.

Lindsey is now 25 and active with horse training for hunting and jumping. Kaelin is 24 and works with animals in the area of veterinary medicine. Ryan is 19, attends Mesa State University in Glenwood Springs, and is an avid rock climber.

In 2002 Larry went to Shanghai, PRC, for seven years to teach at Fudan University and several other universities. He also did consulting for a law firm and in the area of strategy and executive development for a management consultant. While in Shanghai he met his wife, Cher, whom he married in 2007. Since returning to Nebraska in 2009 Larry has been teaching business law in the Community College system in Lincoln, among other activities.

Larry is probably best remembered for the life-long friendships he made in Loup City, Lincoln and elsewhere, usually built around a bond of common interests such as athletics and educational experiences with classmates. Larry worked especially hard to maintain strong friendships with his high school classmates.

The most important part of Larry's life was the desire for his children to have a good life and family of their own. At the time of his death he still had boxes of their childhood artwork, many family photos, and other mementos stored away for safekeeping.

His father, Marvin, preceded Larry in death on October 26, 2011.

Larry is survived by three children: Lindsey, Kaelin and Ryan from his first marriage, and by his second wife, Cher (Xu Shuang), from Lincoln, Ne. His mother, Marion of Nelson, NE, and two brothers, Gary and Cliff, of Bennington, NE, are also living.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 2:00 pm from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska with Rev. Dr. Stephen Berry officiating.

Music was congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" & "Amazing Grace" with Carlita Erickson as organist and recorded songs, "Hotel California" & "Shall We Gather At The River".

Visitation was held on June 12, 2012 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Pallbearers were Dennis Welty, Harold Jakub, Allan Zimmerman, Marlin Bauhard, Glenda Maxon, Nancy Murphy, Marsha Jensen and Patricia Beckner. Honorary pallbearers were the Loup City High School Class of 1968.

Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson, Nebraska.
