Christian Biography of Leona Smidt
Leona Rosina Smidt, the daughter of John and Annie (Krebsbach) Beyke, was born on September 25, 1914 on a farm near Lawrence, Nebraska. She passed away on June 25, 2012 at Superior Good Samaritan Society, Superior, Nebraska at the age of 97 years, and 9 months.
Leona was one of eight children. She attended Sacred Heart School in Lawrence. On April 30, 1935 she was united in marriage to Klaus Smidt at the Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence, Nebraska. This union was blessed with five children.
They lived in Hastings for several years and moved to Superior during the late 40's, where her husband started a construction business.
She was a 64 year member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a member of the Eagle's Auxiliary, Superior Fireman's Auxiliary, St. Joseph Altar Society, member and past president, Red Cross, Cemetery Board member, LDCCW- serving as past president, she also belonged to the birthday club sing along and helped with the Blood Mobile for 20 years.
She enjoyed making quilts, crocheting afghans, and embroidery work, along with sharing time with family and friends and especially her grandchildren.
She entered the Good Samaritan Society on December 9, 2011, due to her health.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Klaus on July 25, 1991; an infant son; daughter, Linda Mazour, son Melvin, daughter-in-law Jean Smidt, brothers Oliver, Valentine and Clarence and sisters Mary Harig and Florentine Jacobs; two great grandchildren and foster cousin Anne Schunk.
Survivors include her sons Gilbert and wife DeEtte and Marvin and wife Marietta and daughter-in-law Janice Smidt all of Superior, Nebraska; 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 9 step great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; brother Joe Beyke and wife Norma of Hastings, Nebraska and sister LaVeta Beyke of Kimball, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
