She was baptized on September 18, 1927, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Standal, Indiana. She was confirmed on September 13, 1942, at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Superior, Nebraska; both of these rites were performed by her father the Rev. Frederick Geiswinkler. Lyda lived in many communities and states. She had a Fondness for Yakima, Washington and when he was called their family moved to Salem Lutheran Church, where she attended school at Nelson, Nebraska. Shortly after moving she attended a "Hay Rack Ride" and spotted what was to become her future husband, Leland Bargen who attended Superior High School. Before graduating the family moved to Rosalie, Nebraska where she graduated in 1945. She attended and graduated from Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa on October 7, 1948.
