Christian Biography of Marvin "Andy" Montgomery

Marvin E. "Andy" Montgomery was born on November 3, 1933 on the family farm in Richland Township, Jewell County, Kansas, the son of Edmon and Alean (Knight) Montgomery. He passed away June 8, 2014 in Salina, Kansas at the age of 80.

Other than a season on a harvest crew and two years in the United States Army he spent his life in Jewell County Kansas and Nuckolls County Nebraska area where he raised a family, worked the family farm, was active in the auction business, and "spoiled" his grandkids. Andy attended Sweet Hill Grade School in rural Jewell County and graduated from Montrose High School in 1951. In 1957, while serving a two year enlistment in the US Army, Andy was united in marriage to Colleen Berniece Morris. After his Army discharge Andy farmed on his own until his retirement in 2007. The family moved to Superior in 1965 where Andy operated an auction house and managed the Superior sale barn. In 1980, Andy bought Mankato Livestock Commission Company which he owned and operated until 2004. After retirement he spent his time at the museum and helping with auctions in the area, always doing something to keep busy. Many afternoons were spent with his grandkids at the farm, riding horses, fishing and "learning" to drive a tractor.

Andy had a deep appreciation for the rural lifestyle and principles of rural America which were instilled upon him while growing up on the farm where hard work was just a way of life. Sharing work and equipment with neighbors enhanced his value of friends and helping others. During his life Andy was proud to have mentored and assisted many young people in their career in the auction business. Andy loved to travel, but was most comfortable "at home". Whenever he was away from home he was always anxious to return as soon as he could finagle it. Whether weekend leave from the Army, a family vacation in Colorado, or a European vacation, the return trip was never too long to make it home the same day. Through the years Andy shared his life and values with the Superior Police Department, As a substitute mail carrier, The Lions Club, Superior City Council, American Legion, The Nebraska Auctioneers Association, and in recent years the Nuckolls County Museum. Andy was honored to be named "Auctioneer of the Year" by the Nebraska Auctioneer's Association in 1998, The Nebraska Auctioneer's Association's Hall of Fame in 2008, and he was named the Grand Marshall of the 2013 Lady Vestey Festival.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edmon and Alean, a brother Richard "Slim", and a sister, Phyllis Doyle.


Andy is survived by his wife, Berniece of Superior; three children, Cathy Thompson and husband Scott, Huntsville, Alabama; Kelly Bouray, Superior, and Scot Montgomery and wife Angie Cheyenne, Wyoming; Seven grandchildren; Nathan Bouray and wife Jennifer, Neil Bouray and fiancé Ashley Hayes, Vanessa Lundgren and husband Bill, Andrew Thompson, Seth Thompson and wife Stephanie, Chase Thompson, and Sam Montgomery, and a sister, Maxine Hall, Superior; nieces, nephews other relatives and a host of friends.



Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 2:00 pm from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor Roger Walls officiating.

Music was "The Old Rugged Cross" with Stephanie Thayer as soloist and with Carlita Price as organist. A recording of "Amazing Grace" by Alan Jackson was played.

Visitation was held on June 11, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Pallbearers were Lester Montgomery, Roy Montgomery, Duane Morris, Darrel Doyle, Ed Hall, and Gary Gronewald. Honorary pallbearers were Seth Thompson, Neil Bouray, Nate Bouray, Andrew Thompson, Chase Thompson, Sam Montgomery, Vanessa Lundgren, Bill Rut, Keith McKeown, Wilmer Bouray, Gayle Johnson, Jon Russell, Bill Logan, Scott Greene and Wilbur "Joe" Becker.

Interment with full military honors was in the Burr Oak Cemetery at Burr Oak, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to go to Nuckolls County Museum or the Webber Church for the Stairway Project.
