Christian Biography of Merna Lee Wester
Merna Lee Wester, the daughter of Ward William and Velma Marie (Tromble) Pruitt, was born on July 27, 1925 on a farm near Barnard, Kansas. She passed away on December 3, 2013 at Beatrice Health & Rehab in Beatrice, Nebraska at the age of 88 years, 4 months, 6 days.
She attended Rocky Point and Star grade schools and Barnard High School.
On December 25, 1942 she married Darrell Wester from Shelbina MO. Three sons were born to this union: Gene, Steve, and Bill. After a short leave to give birth to their first son, she returned to high school and graduated with the Class of 1945.
During their first decade of marriage Darrell and Merna Lee farmed near Barnard. In 1953 they bought and moved to a farm near Burr Oak KS. After the marriage ended in divorce, Merna Lee moved to Superior NE in 1965.
Merna Lee was a doting mother, generous friend, and involved citizen. She openly and regularly shared her faith, time, energy, and possessions. She was active in church and community activities. Over the years she was active in the Barnard Baptist Church, Northbranch Friends Church, Burr Oak Christian Church, and the Superior Baptist Church. She was a member of the West Walnut Home Extension Club. She enjoyed her family, home, animals, trees, friends, and travel. A loyal and loving daughter, she took care of her father during the last eight and a half years of his life as he gradually succumbed to the ravages of Alzheimer's disease.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Paul Pruitt, and a son Bill Wester.
She is survived by one sister, Sue Gustafson, Concordia KS; two sons, Gene Wester, Pasadena CA, and Steve Wester and wife, Cindy, Beatrice NE; six grandchildren, Janice Wester and David Wester, Sycamore IL, Karen Wester, Rancho Cucamonga CA, Andy Wester and Josh Wester, Omaha NE, Shannon Wester, Chadron NE; six great-grandchildren, other relatives, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at 11:00 AM from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Nebraska with Rev. Floyd Richardson officiating.
Music was congregational hymns "In the Garden," and "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow," with Carlita Price as organist.
Visitation was held on Sunday 1-8 and Monday 9-8 with family present from 5:30 to 7:30.
Pallbearers were Andrew Wester, Joshua Wester, Max Pruitt, Mike Pruitt, Paula Lundblad, Don Pruitt, Jim Harlow and Cathy Warkentin.
Interment: 3:00 PM in the Fairview Cemetery, Saltville, Kansas in Mitchell County south of Beloit, Kansas.
