Christian Biography of Norman Shafer

Norman Wendell Shafer, the son of Ralph and Bernice (Chamberlain) Shafer, was born on August 12, 1925 on a farm north of Superior, Nebraska. He passed away on March 2, 2017 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 91 years, 6 months, 18 days.

Norman attended school in Superior, graduating from Superior High School. He was inducted into the United States Navy on December 11, 1943 serving during WW II and was honorably discharged on May 12, 1946. On September 25, 1949, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Newton at the First Baptist Church in Superior, Nebraska. This union was blessed with three daughters.

Norman was a member of the Superior American Legion, Kearney VFW, Last Man's American Legion Club, Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge, and a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Superior. He also, was a race car driver and became a member of the Belleville High Banks Hall of Fame. He retired from the Omaha World Herald as a District Manager/Supervisor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Daryl, and a sister, Patricia Heitman.

Survivors include his wife Lorraine, of Superior, Nebraska; daughters, Karen Crook and husband John of Omaha, Nebraska, Nancy Kloppenborg of Hastings, Nebraska, and Kellie Neill of Wichita, Kansas; sister, Maralyne Gallagher of Gothenburg, Nebraska; 4 grandchildren, Dr. Brian Kloppenborg and wife Jessica of Atlanta, Georgia, Linda Shaw and husband Mike of Hastings, Nebraska, Dr. Trystan Crook and wife Hope of Kansas City, Kansas and Aaron Crook of Kansas City, Kansas; 9 great grandchildren, Cadyn Crook, Hudsyn Crook, Sara Kloppenborg, Michael, Jacob, Katelyn, Isaiah, Madison and Owen Shaw; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 2:00 pm from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor Ben Poole officiating with Masonic Rites concluding the services.

Music was congregational hymns "Amazing Grace" and "Nearer My God to Thee" with Carlita Price as accompanist and "How Great Thou Art" solo by John Price.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm with the family present to greet friends from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.

Pallbearers were Dr. John Crook, Dr. Brian Kloppenborg, Jason Jensen, Frank Borden, James Keifer and Justin Keeling.

Interment with full military honors was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska.

Memorials are suggested to go to UNMC for Geriatric Research; Disabled American Veterans; or the First Baptist Church in Hastings, Nebraska.
