Christian Biography of Oleta Wilhelmina Mueller Hobson
Oleta Wilhelmina Mueller Hobson was born on June 19, 1924, at the family home 8¼ miles north of Humboldt, Nebraska. She passed away on April 28, 2018 at the Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kansas. Oleta was the daughter of John Heinrich and Tracy Kuper Mueller. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith at the St. John's Lutheran Church Parsonage (Stone) in rural Auburn, Nebraska on July 17, 1924. She was confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Auburn, Nebraska on April 10, 1938.
Oleta attended kindergarten through twelfth grades of school at Bratton Union Consolidated High School in Richardson County, Nebraska (7 miles north and 1 mile east of Humboldt, Nebraska). She graduated in 1942 as the valedictorian. She attended Humboldt High School as a Post Graduate Student and Peru State Teacher's College for 2 years where she received her Teacher's Certificate. Oleta taught all 8 grades at the rural school, "Hopkins" in Nemaha County for 3 years and then taught the 7th and 8th grades at Hardy, Nebraska for four years. While in Hardy, she introduced volleyball into the high school curriculum and coached the girls' volleyball team for 3 years.
Oleta met Calvin Hobson while teaching at Hardy and they were married on July 31, 1949 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Auburn, Nebraska. After their marriage, they moved to his grandfather's farm located 6 miles south of Hardy, Nebraska.
Oleta was an active member of the Hardy Union Church. She was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. She held offices in the Hardy Federated Woman's Club and was a member of the Women's Christian Union. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and was active with the Hardy Girl Scouts. She was a faithful spectator at her children's sporting events. She enjoyed traveling, reading and sewing. Oleta enjoyed working in her large vegetable garden and flower gardens. She was a dedicated Kansas State University sports fan. She was a wonderful homemaker and a fantastic cook.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin; her brother, Alfred Mueller and her parents.
She will be forever remembered by her sister, Alta Wagner of Auburn, Nebraska; her sons, Clifford Hobson and wife Sue of Topeka, KS, and Leon Hobson and wife Claudia of Manhattan, KS; her daughter, Elaine Spafford and husband James of St. Joseph, MO; her grandsons, John Hobson of Colorado Springs, CO, Chad Hobson of Houston, TX, and Shane Audley of Kansas City, MO; her granddaughter, Deandra Audley of Olathe, KS; other relatives and a community of dear friends.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Union Church of Hardy in Hardy, Nebraska with Pastor Emily Meckley officiating. Interment will follow at Rosemound Cemetery near Hardy. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 4, 2018 from 4 until 8 PM with the family present from 6 until 8 PM at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior. Memorials have been suggested to the Union Church of Hardy or the Republic County Historical Society Museum.Friday
