Christian Biography of Phyllis A. (Russell) Mahin

Phyllis A Mahin, the third child born to Carl and Dorothy (Anderson) Russell, was born on November 28, 1933 on a farm north of Courtland, Kansas. She passed away on July 14, 2017 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 83 years, 7 months, 16 days.

Phyllis attended the Park Hill Country School and Courtland High School graduating in 1951. On June 15, 1952 Phyllis married the love of her life, William Joseph Mahin, and to this union six children were born, Linda, Greg, Bill Jr., Susan, Shari and Joel. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.  She enjoyed sharing stories and experiences from her childhood, important events in her life and reminiscing about family.   Phyllis's favorite past time was embroidering tea towels, as she gave many as wedding and shower gifts.  She also enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening on the farm.  Her favorite activity was spending time with her children, grandchildren and many family members. Her children and grandchildren were her most prized possessions and enjoyed attending all of their school activities and sporting events.  Her kind and loving heart lead her to think of others and remember them by sending them a card, or two.

For many years she was employed at the Republic County Hospital and loved caring for her patients.  She also worked at the Pike Valley Schools, the Jewell County Daycare, Kaffe House in Scandia, Kansas, FSA office, Belleville, Kansas and was the Meals on Wheels site manager.

Phyllis was baptized and accepted the Lord as her Savior on March 28, 1948, in the United Methodist Church, Courtland, Kansas where she continued her lifetime membership.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William Mahin, parents Carl and Dorothy Russell and a brother, James Russell.

Phyllis will be forever remembered by her children, Linda and husband Dale True of Lebo Kansas,  Greg and wife Trudy Mahin of Montezuma, Kansas, Bill Jr. and wife Sherie of Courtland, Kansas, Susan and husband Richard Bergling of Elkhart, Kansas, Shari and husband Kenny Ubelaker  of Osborne, Kansas and Joel Mahin of Courtland, Kansas; grandchildren Travis and wife Becky True of Topeka, Kansas, Tina and husband Lee Andrews of Gardner, Kansas, Bryce True of Lawrence, Kansas, Kelsey True and Grant Lind of Overland Park, Kansas, Jacey Mahin of Great Bend, Kansas, Caleb and wife Gayle Mahin of Formoso, Kansas, Luke Mahin and Jennifer McCarty of Courtland, Kansas, Drew and wife Corinna Mahin of Concordia, Kansas, Ethan and wife Lizzie Mahin of Courtland, Kansas, Hannah Mahin and Shane Champlin of Concordia Kansas, Amy and husband Justin Miller of Las Vegas, Nevada, Megan and husband Jordan Calvery of Wichita, Kansas, Sarah Bergling of Wichita, Kansas, Brooke and husband Joe Terick of Topeka, Kansas, Karie Ubelaker of Topeka, Kansas, Kenton Ubelaker of Hays, Kansas, Kaitlyn Mahin of Columbia, Missouri, Braden Mahin of Lincoln, Kansas, Brett Mahin of Lincoln, Kansas, Kristen Mahin of Lincoln, Kansas. Also remembering her are her brothers and sisters, Chester Russell and wife Mildred of Courtland, Kansas, Verlee Russell of Beloit, Kansas, Gene Russell and wife Joanne of Scandia, Kansas, Beverly Sothers of Courtland, Kansas, Max Russell and wife Kay of Wamego, Kansas, Maxine and husband Jan Frederickson of Quinter, Kansas, Ken Russell and wife Mary of Abilene, Kansas, Charles Russell and wife June of Webber, Kansas and Penny and husband Don True of Council Grove, Kansas.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 10:00 AM from the Courtland Methodist Church in Courtland, Kansas with Pastor Sandra Jellison-Knock officiating.

Music was "Children of the Heavenly Father", "In the Garden," "Old Rugged Cross," and "Lord of the Dance," with Judy Blackburn as the organist and Lyle Bergstrom as the soloist.

Visitation was held on Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:00 PM with family present from 5:30 – 7 to greet friends.

Pallbearers were Jacey Mahin, Travis True, Caleb Mahin, Kenton Ubelaker, Braden Mahin and Bryce True.  Honorary Pallbearers were Drew Mahin, Luke Mahin, Ethan Mahin and Brett Mahin.

Interment was in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Courtland, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to go to the Courtland Methodist Church or the Courtland City mini park fund.
