Roger was born in Omaha on October 30, 1934 and was the adopted son of Everett and Blanche Nelson. He was baptized at the Nora United Methodist Church and confirmed at the Davenport United Methodist Church. He graduated from Davenport High School. He was blessed with a beautiful voice, and he enjoyed singing throughout his life.

In 1956 he married Dorothy Keim and during their marriage three daughters were born. He later married Nancy Utecht and gained two stepsons. In 1995, he married Linda West and gained two more stepchildren.

Roger thoroughly enjoyed farming in the Davenport area and later the Riverton area. He was a member and officer of the Nuckolls County Livestock Feeders. He also held county Farm Bureau offices and served on the state board for four years. He was also a longtime member of the Lions Club and Elks Club.

More recently, in addition to contributing his service, Roger valued the friendships he made while serving on the Lower Republican NRD for 23 years and the Nebraska Assn of Resource Districts for 19 years.

Roger and Linda spent many winters in Arizona where they enjoyed the weather and expanding their circle of friends. In recent years, he enjoyed meeting his coffee friends each morning and singing with the Pope's People.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepson Mark, grandson Logan, and great grandson Samuel.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Linda, daughters Deb (Robert) Folkerts, Julie (Todd) Jensen, Carla (Ray) Werner, stepchildren Matt Utecht, Nicole Burgess and Brad Burgess. He is also survived by six grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and a host of dear friends.
