Christian Biography of Stanley Stuart Sheets

Stanley Stuart Sheets, the son of Emmett and Bernice (Leach) Sheets, was born on April 18, 1927 in Beaver City, Nebraska. He passed away on November 10, 2019 at the Lancaster Rehabilitation at Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 92 years, 6 months, 23 days.

His family moved to Holdrege when Stan was five years old, living there a couple of years before making their home in Superior where Stan grew up and attended school graduating from Superior High School.

He joined the army in 1945 and was part of the occupation forces in Germany.  It was there he discovered his love of travel while visiting Germany, Switzerland, and Italy while on leave.  On returning to the States he enrolled in M.I.T. and began his study of Architecture. A year later he transferred closer to home to the University of Nebraska.

It was in Lincoln where he met his future wife Ruth Elaine Bomberger.  They were married in January, 1951.  Stan returned to Superior with his wife and began working in the family business-Valley Lumber, a lumber yard.  He had two sons, Michael Jon and James Stuart.  Stan used his architectural training to design houses. Over his career he designed literally hundreds of houses in the Superior area.  In 1976, on the retirement of his father, he became president and changed the name to Valley Building.

Stan particularly enjoyed travelling.  He and Ruth visited Europe and even North Africa.   Among the countries they visited were France, Spain, Portugal, and even Morocco.  In the United States they visited Hawaii and Florida and several times Palm Springs.  A few years after the death of his wife in 2004, he took one last major trip to England.

Stan was very active in the community.  He wrote and published a history of Superior.  He was a past president of the Elks Club.  He was on the Chamber of Commerce.  In later years he was an important part of the committee to restore the auditorium.

Stan had a brother Charles and a sister Betty Hullett now deceased.  He is survived by a son Michael Sheets and a grandson Trevor Sheets.
