Vernadine Giess, the daughter of George and Doris (Miley) Lapp, was born on February 3, 1936 in Benkelman, Nebraska. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 6, 2018 at the Hilltop Lodge Nursing Home at Beloit, Kansas at the age of 82 years, 1 month, 3 days.
Growing up in Hamlet, Nebraska and graduating from Wauneta, Nebraska with the class of 1954.
She met and married Don Hancok in 1961 in Palisade, Nebraska and to this union they were blessed with 2 children. They lived in several different areas including Hardy, Nebraska and Webber, Kansas.
Her passion was caring for elderly and she shared this by working as a CNA in hospital and nursing home settings.
Later in life she met and married Wilbur Giess of Salina, Kansas. In 1987 they moved to Smith Center then returned back to Salina, where they were members of the First Southern Baptist Church. Vernadine enjoyed working in the nursery, and they babysat for neighbors especially Trinity.
After Wilbur's death in 2008, Vernadine moved to Mankato where she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and baking for them. She loved the Huskers, Nascar racing, and her many neighbors.
One of her biggest passions in life were her many pen pals from all over the United States.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wilbur and her younger brother Ray Lapp.
She is survived by her daughter Doris (Arnold) Woerner of Burr Oak, Kansas and her son Ron (Paula) Hancock of Mankato, Kansas; four grandchildren Buck (Emily) Woerner of Belleville, Kansas; Wes (Wendy) Woerner of Burr Oak, Kansas; Jessica and Maci Hancock of Mankato, Kansas; 10 great grandchildren; and a nephew Mike Lapp of Anthony, Kansas; other relatives and a host of friends.
Private family graveside services will be held.
