Vernon James Quy, age 95, of Fremont, NE passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha.

Vernon was the ninth and last child born to James and Nellie Quy. He was born on January 9, 1919, which was also his father's birthday. Vernon attended the Blue Bird one-room school house and graduated from Formoso KS High School in 1937. In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and he and his 6 brothers all served in WWII at the same time. After the military, he and his brother Kenneth opened a roller skating rink in Mankato, KS and ran it together. He married the love of his life Inez Payne, on February 15, 1942.

After several years, Vernon and Inez moved to Superior, NE, where Vernon constructed over 135 homes and remodeled many more. After retiring he restored many cars, one of which was a 1934 Ford which is on display at the Ford Museum in Sacramento, CA. They moved to Hastings for a brief time before their final move to Fremont, NE. Vernon was always known for his love of roller skating, and he roller skated until he was 80. He appeared on the Johnny Carson's Tonight show in 1990 to demonstrate the gas powered roller skates he invented. His roller skates are now on display in the National Roller Skating Museum in Lincoln, NE.

He is preceded in death by his wife Inez, parents, brother, and sisters.

He is survived by his sons, Stanley (Lanet) Quy of Valley, NE, Dennis (Joyce) Quy of Apple Valley, MN, and daughter Margaret (Bruce) Sheffield of Raymond, NE, 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 9:30AM at Dugan Funeral Chapel with Reverend Diana Kuhl officiating. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont, NE with full military honors.

Memorials may be directed to the National Roller Skating Museum.
