Christian Biography of Verona Lee (Pohlmann) Gumaer

Verona Lee Gumaer, the daughter of Herman and Ruth (Fangmeier) Pohlmann, was born on March 28, 1942 in Deshler, Nebraska. She passed away on February 11, 2016 at the Superior Good Samaritan Society at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 73 years, 10 months, 14 days.

She was baptized on April 19, 1942 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Stoddard and confirmed on May 26, 1956 also at Stoddard. Verona attended rural Stoddard Elementary School and graduated in 1959 from Chester High School and also graduated from Fairbury Junior College with a degree in business. This is where she met the love of her life Wayne Gumaer, and on August 24, 1962 they were married at Deshler, Nebraska and to this union was born six children.

Verona was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church south of Nelson since 1967 and was very close to her faith. She held numerous offices and belonged to many organizations in the church which strengthened her faith in God. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, loved flowers and gardening, was an avid bird lover, collected tea pots, enjoyed taking family and friends shopping, had many fun times camping and was a lover of animals, especially cats, dogs, baby calves and chickens. Verona had a gentle nature that always brought a smile. During her lifetime she lived in the communities of rural Deshler, Chester, Fairbury, Peru, Greeley, Colorado, Franklin, Naponee and Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant son and an infant daughter and her parents-in-law, Kenneth and Ruth (Achtemeier) Gumaer.

She is survived by her husband Wayne of Nelson, son, Jonathan Gumaer of Big Springs, Nebraska, daughters, Caroline Mosier and husband Darrel of Shickley, Nebraska and Rebecca Skalka of Glenvil, Nebraska and son Jeremy Gumaer and wife Carolyn of Utica, Nebraska. Grandchildren, Jorie Lanik and husband Aaron of Geneva, Nebraska, Jacie Bird and husband Ryan of Hebron, Nebraska, Joshua Gumaer and wife Jerra of Deshler, Nebraska, Logan Gumaer of Big Springs, Nebraska, JoLynn Mosier of Strang, Nebraska, Crayton Mosier and Caitlin Mosier of Shickley, Nebraska, Graceyn Skalka, Kynnzie Skalka and Ryleigh Skalka of Glenvil, Nebraska, Jayde Gumaer and Andrea Gumaer of Utica, Nebraska. Great-Grandchildren, Lorriana Lanik of Geneva, Nebraska, Blake Bird and Alaina Bird of Hebron, Nebraska and Paizleigh Gumaer of Deshler, Nebraska. She is also survived by her brother, Merlyn Pohlmann and wife Lorena of Deshler, Nebraska and sister-in-law Jean Liedtke-Davis and husband Jay of Rantoul, Kansas and her longtime caregiver and special friend, Helen Wainright of Nelson, Nebraska along with numerous relatives and friends.


Funeral services were held on Monday, February 15, 2016 at 10:30 am from the Salem Lutheran Church in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor Kathryn Bates officiating.

Music was a duet of "In the Garden" by Tom Jensen and Brian Grueber. Congregational hymns were "Great Is Thy Faithfulness", "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "Lift High the Cross" with Lorraine Smith as organist.

Pallbearers were Jorie Lanik, Jacie Bird, Joshua Gumaer, Logan Gumaer, JoLynn Mosier, Crayton Mosier, Caitlin Mosier, Graceyn Skalka, Kynnzie Skalka, Ryleigh Skalka, Jayde Gumaer and Andrea Gumaer. Honorary Pallbearers were Lorriana Lanik, Blake Bird, Alaina Bird and Paizleigh Gumaer.

Interment was in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Superior, Nebraska.

A memorial has been established and can go in care of the family.
