Christian Biography of Virginia Rhoads
Virginia Lee Martin Rhoads was born on June 16, 1929 on a farm near Mt. Clare, Nebraska, the oldest child of Robert James Harold and Helen (McFarland) Martin. She passed away on July 16, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 88 years.
She was baptized and became a member of the Beulah Reformed Presbyterian Church, later transferring her membership to the First Presbyterian Church in Superior, Nebraska. She graduated from Superior High School and worked in the Superior area her entire life. On February 8, 1948, she was united in marriage to Roy D. Rhoads. To this union four children were born: Reginald Dean, Richard Dean, Randall Dean and Royalee Deanne.
She was one of the first 3 individuals from Nebraska to pass the Nationally Certified Professional Secretary exam in 1950. She used her secretarial skills to start her own business, Rhoads Secretarial Service. She later became a certified abstractor and operated Abstracts Inc. in conjunction with her secretarial business. She knew well the joy of a job well done and always loved her work. She was also active in the church, serving as Deacon, Elder, Church Secretary, Session Clerk, and Stated Clerk of the Central Nebraska Presbytery. Among her many activities she enjoyed her time as a foster grandparent in the Superior Schools. She was an avid reader with a great appreciation for the local library.
Roy preceded her in death on June 6, 1976; her parents; sister Elaine Karnes of Poland Ohio; and brothers Steve Martin of Belleville, Kansas and Rich Martin of Scott City, Kansas.
She is survived by her four children: Royalee Rhoads of Burnsville, Minnesota; Randy Rhoads (Cindy) of Superior, Nebraska; Richard Rhoads (Karen) of Kearney, Nebraska and Reginald Rhoads (Mary) of Grand Island, Nebraska; as well as 6 grandchildren: Mickayla Ochsner (Michael), Marcella Anthony (Michael), Abigail Hanzlik (Curtis), Richard Rhoads, Jr. (Casey), Alisha Lautenschlager (J Allen), and Joshua Rhoads (Ashley); 10 great grandchildren: Addison and Logan Oschsner. Caroline, Everett and Louis Hanzlik, Paris, Ethan and Julianne Lautenschlager, and Makayla and Jaxson Rhoads; sister-in-law Lora Martin of Belleville, Kansas; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 2:00 PM from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor David Watters officiating.
Music was "Amazing Grace," and "Old Rugged Cross," with Carlita Price as the accompanist.
Visitation was held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM with family present from 5-7 to greet friends.
Pallbearers were Richard Rhoads, Jr., Joshua Rhoads, J. Lautenschlager, Paris Lautenschlager, James Zoltenko, and Cole Zoltenko.
Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to go to the First Presbyterian Church or the Superior Public Library.
