Christian Biography of W. Maxine McCutchan

Wilma Maxine McCutchan, the daughter of William and Verna (Littrell) Eckles, was born on July 21, 1925 in Nelson, Nebraska. She passed away on January 30, 2017 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 91 years, 6 months, 9 days.

Maxine was one of five children; she was a Plattsmouth High graduate, and a member of the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson. On February 14, 1954 at the Presbyterian Church in Nelson, she was united in marriage to Robert Allen McCutchan and this union was blessed with a daughter and son.

While working in the tax preparation field, Maxine attended Central Nebraska Community College in Hastings, and H & R tax preparation school. She also was a bank teller, farm wife and mother.

In her spare time, Maxine loved and was an avid gardener and canned and pickled much of her crop. She gave boxes of her home canned produce to family and friends every year at Christmas. The unanimous favorite was her crunchy pink ripe cucumber pickles. Maxine loved her cats; she had many on the farm and several different ones after moving to town. She enjoyed reading and working jigsaw puzzles. She collected glass figurines her whole life. Her biggest collections were sugar and creamers, owls, and blue glass. She will be remembered by her wit, her laugh and her ornery sense of humor.

Maxine was a member of the Nelson Order of Eastern Star, Women's Club, Nelson American Legion Axillary, and Band Mothers and was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader.

During her lifetime, Maxine lived in Nelson, Hastings, Edgar, Wilbur, and Plattsmouth, living on the farm North East of Nelson and moving into Nelson in 1989.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bob on May 30, 2005; brother John Wendell; sister Betty Jo Pittam and husband Gerald; sisters-in-law, Lenore Eckles, Alice Eckles, and Evelyn Luth and husband Joe; niece, Jolyn Luth Walker.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Susan McCutchan and her son, William "Bill" Walter McCutchan and wife Debbie all of Nelson, Nebraska; two grandchildren, Joseph William and Chantel Rose McCutchan; and one great granddaughter, Bella Rose McCutchan; siblings, Phillip Virgil Eckles and wife Gerry of Nelson, Nebraska, William Louis Eckles Jr. of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Eckles of Benedict, Nebraska; and brother-in-law Duane McCutchan and wife Gayle of Reedly, California; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.


Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 2:00 pm from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska with Royce Schott officiating.

Music was "In The Garden," with Stephanie Thayer as soloist and congregational hymn "Amazing Grace," with Carlita Price as the accompanist.

Pallbearers were Joseph McCutchan, Dick Eckles, Daniel Eckles, Bob Eckles, Nancy Eckles and Adam Nielsen.

Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson, Nebraska.

Memorials are suggested to go to the Nelson Community United Church of Christ or the Nelson American Legion.
