Christian Biography of Wilbur H. "Joe" Becker

Wilbur H. "Joe" Becker, the son of Herman and Sophia (Kasiska) Becker was born on a farm in Lincoln County Kansas near Sylvan Grove on October 6, 1931. He passed away on May 8, 2015 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 83 years, 7 months, 2 days.
Wilbur's mother died when he was nine years old and his three older sisters helped raise him. Wilbur attended school at Trail Creek Country School in Lincoln County. He was baptized and confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. When he was 16 he moved to Jewell County with his father north and east of Mankato. In February of 1953 he was inducted into the United State Army where he served with the 11th Combat Engineers. He was on his way to Korea when they signed the peace treaty and was honorably discharged in January of 1955. After he was discharged he owned and operated a trucking service.
On October 12, 1958 he was united in marriage to Betty Tyler at Centennial Lutheran in Superior and to this union was born three children. Together he and Betty farmed for nearly 50 years. He also worked at the Mankato and Superior Sale Barns for some time. He drove a school bus for a few years until Betty took over the driving. On October 24, 2002 he had a severe farming accident which took his left leg and he the retired and moved to Mankato. He still loved to go to the farm helping move farm equipment from field to field or just taking refreshments out the guys to see how things were going. After moving to Mankato, he took up making small wood knick knacks and repairing furniture. He loved having people stop by the shop so he could show them what he was working on. He also enjoyed sitting on the front porch with Betty in the evening and going to ballgames.
He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Jewell County COOP Board, The Richland TWP Board, Soil Conservation Board and the Richland TWP Fire Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Cora Rahmeier, Dorintha Standley and Bernice Selvage.
He is survived by his wife Betty of Mankato, Kansas, son, Neil "Sam" Becker and wife Marilou of Mankato, Kansas, daughters, Shirley Fisher and fiancé Jack Alcorn of Mankato, Kansas and Lori Carter of Longford, Kansas; 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
